Developing a clinical trial protocol and securing funding for clinical trials is not an easy task. It requires hours of hard work and input to refine an idea and write a good protocol. This effort benefits from strong mentorship and teachers with expertise in clinical trial design and letter of intent or protocol writing. To this end, ASTRO is launching a couple initiatives to support its members in the endeavor of developing clinical trials.
For more than 20 years, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) have been helping investigators develop strong methods and write winning protocols for clinical trials through the ASCO/AACR Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop, commonly known as the Vail Workshop. Now ASTRO is also helping out.
For the second year, ASTRO is helping support the Vail Workshop through a grant to ASCO/AACR to support radiation oncologists interested in developing clinical trials. What is the Vail Workshop? It is a week-long, intensive workshop that teaches the essentials of clinical trial design, held each summer in Vail, Colorado. Aimed at fellows and junior faculty, the workshop introduces investigators to good clinical trial design and provides mentorship to help with protocol development. The week includes group sessions, lectures, small group sessions, office hours for individual counseling and career development sessions.
Applications for the 2017 meeting, which will be held July 29–August 4, are due this Friday, March 10. Visit the Vail Workshop website for more information and the link to apply.
In addition, this year ASTRO is hosting a Letter of Intent Writing Workshop. Led by experts in the National Cancer Institute (NCI), this workshop will teach investigators how to develop a Letter of Intent for phase 0 and phase 1 clinical trials. This workshop will be held on the National Institutes of Health main campus in Bethesda, Maryland, on June 16, 2017 immediately after the Immunotherapy Workshop: Integrating Radiation Oncology into Immunotherapy. Participants do not have to attend the Immunotherapy Workshop to register for the Letter of Intent Workshop. Register today!
